Strengthening Shoulder Muscles - Important!

An important part of tennis fitness is to make sure you are fit and healthy to play which means avoiding injuries! A common injury that occurs in tennis is a rotator cuff injury. This injury can be caused by repetitive and strenuous movements of the shoulder which increases the chances of being injured just by playing tennis.

What to avoid...
Just like tennis elbow this injury can cause a lot of pain and the only thing a doctor will do is give you a course of anti-inflammatory medication and tell you to rest. After 2 weeks or so you will realize that the pain will disappear and you will jump straight back onto the court but that will just result in you being injured once again and starting off at square 1.

So what do I do?
The reason for a rotator cuff injury firstly is strenuous activity in the shoulder and the best way to bypass this is to increase the muscles in your shoulder!

You can do this in the comfort of your own home by picking up a few weights (LIGHT!) and doing some exercises which are targeted to the shoulder such as front raises, bicep curls, side raises etc.

By keeping this in mind you will keep yourself injury free and manage to maintain your level of tennis fitness.
